Rustic Cottage Scene (19th Century)

A nineteenth-century continental school oil on canvas depicting a rustic cottage interior.

Gathered around a large wooden table, a family are accompanied by a cat and a small dog, while shelves of blue and white pottery, domestic utensils and a staircase enrich the scene with narrative detail.

Condition: The condition is typical for a picture of this age. The canvas has been relined to the reverse. There is craquelure and light scuffing to the surface of the oil. The antique frame shows signs of wear with various moulding losses and stable cracking on all rails. The frame's gesso layer is starting to show in areas.
