Bernard Charles: Stoneware Sgraffito Bowl

A large stoneware studio pottery bowl by Bernard Charles, footed and with a flared rim and sgraffito decoration.

The bowl has a shallow, open form with a neatly turned foot, the exterior embellished with freely incised swirling and linear motifs executed during the throwing process. The interior is finely combed with vertical lines, creating a subtle textural contrast.

The glaze is a soft off‑white with natural iron speckling and firing variation, characteristic of late 20th‑century British studio ceramics. This piece likely dates from Charles’s dedicated studio period following his retirement from teaching in the early 1980s.

Condition: some minor chips around the rim, which do not detract from the piece.
