A thoughtful and highly personal work by George Aird (British, 1934 - 2021), this painting is a direct tribute to his friend Arthur Delaney, reinterpreting Delaney’s well-known view of Piccadilly, Manchester.

Delaney’s original compositions captured the energy of Manchester’s city centre with busy streets filled with pedestrians, trams, and the recognisable landmark of Piccadilly Gardens providing a strong sense of place and nostalgic atmosphere. Here, Aird revisits that same composition, producing not a literal copy but a considered reinterpretation, maintaining the structure of the scene while subtly shifting the tone and handling.

The connection between artists is central to the work. Aird was not only a contemporary but a friend within the Northern art circle, and his own background adds further depth: he was also a close associate and agent of L. S. Lowry, whose influence is visible in the simplified figures and rhythmic arrangement of the urban scene. Delaney himself was strongly shaped by Lowry’s vision of industrial Manchester, creating a lineage that runs through the painting—Lowry to Delaney, and from Delaney to Aird.
