Ebonised Torchères (Pair), Late Victorian

£395.00

An elegant pair of late Victorian ebonised torchères dating from the late 19th century, combining architectural form with restrained decorative detailing. Each stand features a circular spindle-galleried top above three slender turned supports, united by a shaped undertier centred by an urn finial and raised on swept tripod legs with geometric carved ornament.

The design reflects the influence of the late Victorian Aesthetic Movement, with its emphasis on balanced proportions, turned decoration and ebonised finishes. Equally suited to displaying sculpture, ceramics, busts or trailing plants, these stands make a striking decorative statement while retaining a light visual presence.

The pair carries a Christie's inventory label to the underside and was sold as Lot 5, Sale 9323, European Furniture, Christie's South Kensington, 20 February 2002, where catalogued as "A Pair of Ebonised Torchères, Late 19th Century." The Christie's catalogue further notes the stands as having been redecorated.

A handsome and increasingly scarce pair of Victorian display stands, offering both decorative appeal and documented auction provenance.

Provenance: Christie's South Kensington, European Furniture, Sale 9323, Lot 5, 20 February 2002. Acquired by Vaulted from an antiques dealer in 2026.
