Carved Kisii Soapstone Fish Sculpture, Kenya

Hand-carved soapstone fish vessel, likely originating from the Kisii region of Kenya. Sculpted from a substantial block of pale soapstone and decorated with incised scales and blackened detailing, the piece combines folk-art character with impressive craftsmanship.

The fish is carved with an exaggerated open mouth, stylised fins and finely engraved surface decoration. Most unusual is the hollowed interior, which has been carved and stained to evoke the appearance of a traditionally gutted fish, lending the sculpture a playful and distinctive quality rarely encountered in comparable examples.

Weighing approximately 15-20kg, the piece possesses a strong sculptural presence and works equally well as a decorative object, centrepiece, or statement vessel. The natural variations and veining within the stone further enhance its unique character.
