Shanghai Pipe Smoker, Shen Shaolun (1984)

A characterful watercolour portrait by Shen Shaolun (1935-2003), painted in Shanghai in 1984. Depicting a man smoking a traditional long-stemmed bamboo pipe, the work combines confident brushwork with a strong sense of personality and presence.

Shen Shaolun was a noted Shanghai watercolourist, a member of the China Artists Association and later President of the Shanghai Watercolour Painting Research Association. Best known for his watercolour work, his paintings capture both everyday subjects and scenes of Chinese life.
